Genesis Lee Niehus is the first baby born at MercyOne Newton

It has been almost three weeks since the first baby born at MercyOne Newton Medical Center graced the building, and for parents of Genesis Lee, Tatiana and Aaron Niehus, this isn’t the first time bringing a little life into the world.

Genesis Lee is Tatiana Niehus’s fourth child and Wednesday morning little she was fast asleep but quickly woke up and became fussy. Niehus knew it was time for some food and quickly prepared a bottle. After Genesis Lee had a full belly she slipped back into a slumber.

“If she has got a full belly she is happy,” Niehus said.

For Genesis Lee her entrance into this world was planned by her parents so they had plenty of opportunity to prepare ahead for her arrival. Niehus said this allowed for her to take some more time off from work than she is used to.

“Since we planned her ... We saved up money for nine months so I could take time off,” Niehus said.

In terms of how Genesis is getting along, after only being in the world for almost three weeks now, Niehus said that she is pretty easy in terms of a newborn but that isn’t anything she isn’t accustomed to with experience from her other children.

“She is pretty easy, like my other ones were, but I guess after two, what’s three and then what’s four,” Niehus said with a chuckle.

The first night home for the newborn Genesis went pretty well according to Niehus, but Niehus said the pregnancy was a little tougher than those of her other children but that didn’t stop her from continuing to work for as long as she could.

"I worked right up until my due date. My last day of work was the day before I went and got induced,"
hus said.

Little Genesis Lee was born at 8:53 p.m. Jan. 3 at MercyOne Newton and was delivered by Dr. Patrick Edwards. Genesis Lee came in at 20.5 inches and weighed 9 lbs. 0.3 oz which was more than what the doctors had previously predicted.

“The doctors, a couple days before she was born, they thought she was maybe six and a half (or) seven pounds,” Niehus said.

The plans for Niehus and the next couple of weeks before she goes back to work is to enjoy as much time as possible with the newest member of the family, something Niehus said she is enjoying as she gets to spend extra time with her family.

“It has just been nice being at home. I have always said I would never be a stay at home mom but it has actually been really nice being home. Having my days free and spending more time with my kids,” Niehus said.
