Cardinal bowling teams deck Sigourney

Newton High’s Cardinal varsity bowling teams hosted a new team on Saturday at Newton’s Cardinal Lanes. Sigourney is a new member to the Two Rivers Bowling Conference.

It was a sweep for the home teams as the Cardinal girls chalked up a 2,241-1,660 win and the Cardinal boys notched a 2,334-1,718 victory.

“It was a pretty good day against a new opponent and we figured out how they work,” Newton head coach Christie Hughes said. “The boys adjusted and pulled it out.”

Junior Abby Price bowled a season-high 418 series with plenty of strikes and spares in the mix. She finally got back-to-back 200 games — 204-214. She had a 403 series earlier this season, winning the Newton bowling tournament.

“Everything was clicking — pins were falling, messenger were going across the lane and knocking down other pins. It was really exciting,” Price said.

“The team is doing well. We do need to get our Baker Games (scores) up.”

Senior Ashley Loehr rolled a 277 on games of 157 and 120 and senior Gabby Pickerell finished with a 268 (132-136). Freshman Bailey Hansen had a 263 (134-139), junior Jenna Miller had a 258 (137-121) and senior Danny Lewis had a 254 (131-123).

The Cardinal girls led by more than 300 pins — 1,484-1,142 — after the individual games. They had scores of 169, 143, 144, 149 and 152 for a Baker Games total 757.

“I did better than my last meet,” Loehr said. “but I know I can do better.. As a team we’re coming together well, cheering each other on and not getting down on ourselves.”

Senior Carter VanderSchel posted a team-high 365 with games of 169 and 196 followed by junior Thomas Hodnett’s 325 (146-179). Sophomore Evan Benac had a 320 (176-144) and senior Nate Keith rolled a 306 (142-164).

“We could’ve done better today but we’re only practicing three times a week which challenges us,” VanderSchel said. “I switched to two-hand bowling and this was my first meet using that technique. It’s a new experience but I think I did pretty good.”

Seniors Eli Ingle and Alex Wolfe finished with a 279 (133-146) and a 249 (138-111), respectively. Newton’s boys also led by almost 400 pins — 1,595-1,099 — going into the Baker Games. They dropped 739 pins in the rotation games with scores of 118, 141, 147, 177 and 156.

“It went very good with everyone bowling well. There’s ups and downs in bowling but you just have to go to the next frame,” Ingle said. “We’re coming together well even though we might get down on ourselves sometimes, we pick each other up.”

The Newton girls are 3-1 in dual meets and the boys are 2-2 as they wrapped up the first semester of action. They bowl next on Jan. 6 at Bondurant-Farrar.
