Newton man arrested for carrying weapon without permit

A Newton man has been arrested for allegedly flashing a 9MM pistol in front of other residents.

According to the Newton Police Department, officers received a call Darion S. Hermes, 18, was carrying a 9MM pistol on Monday and flashing it in front of residents in the 1500 block of North 11th Avenue East.

Newton police responded to a call at 8:27 p.m. Tuesday in the 1500 block of North 11th Avenue East about a male, identified as Hermes, needing to be served a No Trespass Order from the property.

Jasper County Dispatch advised officers Hermes was in possession of a pistol. Newton police knew Hermes has violent tendencies and to be unpredictable. Officers arrived and made contact with the tenant.

The tenant told the NPD Hermes was asleep on the couch inside and was unsure if he had a gun on him. The tenant gave permission for police to enter the residence and make contact with Hermes.

Officers entered the residence and instructed Hermes to place his hands on top of his head and to stand up. Newton police observed and seized a 9MM pistol from Hermes’ front pocked of his sweatshirt.

Hermes told officers he was holding the gun for a friend. Hermes does not have a carrying weapons permit from Jasper County.

Hermes was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail where he is being held on a $15,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Sept. 25.
