Post office burglary suspect apprehended

A Newton woman suspected of multiple burglaries in the area is in custody.

Athena Duncan, 34, was arrested at 2:53 p.m. Thursday after the Newton Police Department was called to Walmart in reference to a female matching the description of the suspect wanted in connection to the burglary at the Newton U.S. Post Office, according to a press release. Officers arrested Duncan without incident.

She is charged with four counts of burglary, two of which are class D felonies and two are aggravated misdemeanors. She also faces second-degree theft charges and possession of prescription drugs without a prescription.

Duncan is being held at the Jasper County Jail. Her bond has been set at $11,000 cash only and $25,000 cash or surety. Her initial appearance at the Jasper County Courthouse was Friday.

The press release also stated the several recent burglary and theft charges are still under investigation and the public should be aware other suspects remain at large.
