DES MOINES — Newton’s baseball team scored 10 or more runs for the first time this season and snapped a 14-game losing streak following a 14-1, five-inning win over Des Moines North on Saturday.
The Cardinals scored at least two runs in each of the five innings. North (0-24) had only three hits.
“We did what we needed to do and took care of business,” Newton coach Dustin Brisel said. “It was nice to get back into the win column.”
Braydon Chance earned his first varsity win on the mound, allowing no earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Ryan Barr led the Cardinals (2-18) with two hits, two runs, three RBIs and two steals at the plate.
Frankie Cataldo also had two doubles, three runs and three steals. Julian Hotchkin walked three times, scored three runs and stole a base, Ty Arguello and Chance each had one hit, one run and two RBIs and Ben Leal finished with one hit, one run, one RBI, one walk and one steal.
Kael Swarts chipped in a double, one RBI and one walk, Clay Meyer scored a run, had one RBI and walked once and Derek Lanser added a hit and a walk.
“Braydon threw strikes, and we hit strikes at the plate,” Brisel said. “We had a smart approach at the plate.”
