BROOKLYN — Lynnville-Sully’s baseball and softball teams were on the road Monday and swept South Iowa Cedar League games against host BGM.
The Class 1A No 8 Lynnville-Sully softball team notched its 20th victory of the season, beating the BGM Bears 7-3. The Hawk girls ran their SICL record to 14-0 with two conference games remaining and clinch at least a share of the SICL title.
Lynnville-Sully’s baseball team won its fifth straight SICL game, pulling out a 7-6 road win against BGM. The Hawk boys improved to 6-7 in conference play. They are 9-11 overall, winning seven out of their last eight games.
In the softball contest, Lynnville-Sully scored three runs in the second to gain a 3-2 lead. The Hawks plated two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. BGM pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Denali Conover tossed a three-hitter for the Hawks. She walked six and struck out four. She also had one of the team’s four hits, a single.
The Hawks had 10 stolen bases, three by Carson Fisk, who hit a double in the game. Mallory Loftus had a single, three RBIs and three stolen bases.
Laci Keen singled and drove in two runs. Kaleah Ehresman had two stolen bases.
The Hawk softball team has won eight in a row. It is 20-4 and will play at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Colfax-Mingo in a SICL game.
Down 2-1 after two innings, the Hawks scored four runs in the third inning to lead 5-1 in the baseball game. BGM tied the game with two runs in the sixth then Lynnville-Sully outscored BGM in the seventh 2-1 to claim the win.
Payton Van Wyk got the win on the mound in relief of starter Bray Noun Harder, who left in the second inning with an injury. Noun Harder suffered a bad cut to his right hand on a play at the plate, according to L-S head coach Scott Alberts.
Noun Harder went 1 2/3 allowing two runs on one hit and struck out two. Van Wyk worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and had five strikeouts. Blaze Kuhlmann pitched the seventh inning, allowing one run but struck out two.
Slater Young hit two singles and a double for the Hawks. Kuhlmann and Nic Rea had a single and a double apiece. Evan Squires doubled and Van Wyk singled.
The Hawk baseball team hosts Class 1A second-ranked Southeast Warren (18-0) at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Sully. It will host Colfax-Mingo at 6 p.m. Wednesday in SICL play.
