Working through an injury-filled season, Newton High’s Cardinal girls finished fourth in the Little Hawkeye Conference soccer ranks. They went 3-4 in LHC play and finished 9-8 overall.
The Cardinals had six players receive 2019 All-Little Hawkeye Conference soccer honors. With the 1-0 loss by LHC champion Dallas Center-Grimes to Waverly-Shell Rock in Friday’s Class 2A state tournament semifinals, the LHC coaches’ all conference selections could be released.
DCG went 7-0 in LHC play and finished 14-3. It and LHC runner-up Pella (6-1) reached the 2A state tournament and faced off in the opening round with DCG winning 2-1. The DCG Fillies were No. 3 and Pella was No. 6 in the final 2A rankings.
Norwalk, which was third in the conference at 4-2, was ranked No. 9 in 2A. Pella Christian fell out of the 1A rankings at the end of the regular season.
Senior Rachel Rhoads led the Newton contingent of players earning LHC honors. She was named to the All-LHC first team as a midfielder. She had two goals and seven assists on the season. Rhoads was 1-of-2 on penalty kick tries.
Joining her Cardinal teammate on the All-LHC first team was junior Allie Norvell as a defender. She was a stalwart in the back for a Newton team which gave up 11 goals. She scored two goals and was 1-of-1 on penalty kicks.
Junior Kameron Nehring earned second-team honors as a forward for the second year in a row. She led the team with 18 goals and nine assists. She was also named to the Iowa Girls Coaches Association’s 2A Central District second team.
Also earning LHC second-team honors was freshman Brynn Cazett as a midfielder. She was second on the Newton team in scoring 13 goals. She had four assists.
Receiving honorable mention recognition were freshman Aurora Nehring and sophomore Nicole Hernandez.
Aurora Nehring was Newton’s goalkeeper as she had 67 of her season-total 125 saves in LHC games. She had eight shutouts — two in LHC play — and allowed 11 goals for the season. Hernandez had one assist for the season.
