Abracadabra! Iowa magician Eric Michaels approved for Newton Fest

After a successful bout of shorter magic shows scattered throughout last year’s Newton Fest schedule, organizers have agreed to bring back magician Eric Michaels for a full set on opening day of this year’s free community festival.

Following the Newton City Council’s approval of the Iowa magician’s act $525 contract Monday night, Eric Michaels Magic & Illusion is planned to perform June 6 at the Maytag Bowl, the “soft opening” of Newton Fest.

Jessica Lowe Vokes, co-chair of Newton Fest, said Michaels’ magic act will appeal to a wide audience. The family-friendly show includes plenty of intriguing tricks and illusions to stump audiences of all ages, “whether you’re 5 or 95.”

Lowe Vokes said, “He had awesome attendance (last year). People really liked him and people were like, ‘Oh my gosh! That’s really cool!’ He will be bringing a different show with him. This will be a full hour of magic with larger illusions. If you saw him last year, you’ll be seeing something different for 2019.”

Along with a magic show, Newton Fest attendees will be treated to a performance by the American rock band Nelson. The band, made up of twins Matthew and Gunnar Nelson, will perform the set “An Evening with the Nelsons,” a summer playlist of the group’s greatest hits, as well as other familiar tunes.

Organizers also announced actor Butch Patrick, who portrayed Eddie Munster on the 1960s TV sitcom “The Munsters,” will make a special appearance to the Newton Chamber of Commerce Cool Car Show June 8. He will bring along the famous vehicles from “The Munsters,” including the Munster Koach and Drag-u-la.

Admission to Newton Fest is free to the public.
