David J. Prendergast

David J. Prendergast of Newton, passed away Thursday afternoon, March 28, 2019, at Good Shepard Hospice in Lakeland, Fla., surrounded by his family.

A funeral mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. A time of remembrance and celebration of life will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 5 at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Newton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to David’s family.

David John Prendergast, 81, the son of William Paul and Bessie (McGowan) Prendergast, was born May 26, 1937, in Marshalltown. He was a graduate of the Newton Senior High, Class of 1956. David had served his country during the 1960s with the U.S. Army.

On Sept. 10, 1960, David was united in marriage with Lillian Blair in Newton. He was employed by the Maytag Company in Newton retiring in 1985, after 30 years of service. He and Lillian also invested in rental properties for more than 48 years, David retiring in 2009. He was a handy-man and jack of all trades. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton and the Knights of Columbus. He and Lillian had enjoyed boating, waterskiing, camping, flea markets and spending the last 20 plus winters down in Lakeland, Fla.

David is survived by his wife, Lillian; his daughters, Joyce Prendergast (Shawn James), Laura (Steve) Jochems and Julie Prendergast (Rick Roush); his son, James (Jennifer) Prendergast; his grandchildren, David Bentley, Clint Jochems, Rachel Prendergast, Clayton Bentley, Alex Bentley, Austin James and Sarah Prendergast; and many good neighbors and friends. David was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Kathryn Clark and Helen Hart; and a brother, Paul Prendergast. Online condolences may be left for the family at pencefh.com.
