MARSHALLTOWN — NCMP boys’ swimming head coach Sarah Patterson said earlier in the week that senior Carter Briggs and sophomore Jaden Dydell were looking forward to Saturday’s Marshalltown Bobcat Relays.
“They are really excited about being paired up for the 2x100 breaststroke relay,” Patterson said.
Well, the NCMP duo had a strong race winning by 14 seconds. Dydell and Briggs combined for first place in 2 minutes, 8.75 seconds. The second-place time was 2:22.71.
“Each guy’s split was a 1:04 and change,” Patterson said. “It is so fun to watch these two compete and train with each other and support each other.”
NCMP’s Cardinals went into the Bobcat Relays with the goal of placing second as a team in both the varsity and junior varsity divisions. They did just that.
Host Marshalltown won the varsity division with 88 points with NCMP in second with 72 points. Cedar Rapid Kennedy had 44 points for third.
Atlantic was fourth with 38 points followed by Spencer with 28 points and Waterloo with 25.
In the junior varsity division, Marshalltown piled up 98 points to win. NCMP edged out CR Kennedy for second 55-53. Waterloo was fifth with 27 followed by Spencer with 21 and Atlantic with nine points.
“It was a great day for our guys,” Patterson said. “They were competitive and aggressive in their races. Right where we need to be right now.”
NCMP won the opening varsity event — the 200-yard medley relay. Jacob Nedder, Briggs, Izaak Miller and Dydell combined for a 1:48.47 winning time.
Henry Jensen and Deklan Lewis placed third in the 2x200 freestyle in 4:23.02. In the 2x200 medley relay, Nedder and Briggs placed second in 4:33.58.
Miller and Mason Lee combined to take fourth in the 2x50 freestyle relay in 49.35 seconds. The same duo was second in the 2x100 butterfly relay in 2:10.55.
Dydell teamed with Clay Meyer to place second in the 2x100 freestyle relay in 1:52.66.
“Devin Lamb and Henry Jensen took third in the varsity 2x500 freestyle,” Patterson said. “Both boys posted personal or season best times. I was proud of their splits and their efforts.”
Lamb and Jensen’s combined time was 12:09.02.
In the traditional 200 freestyle relay, NCMP’s foursome of Briggs, Dydell, Meyer and Lee took second in 1:38.27.
Lewis and Nedder turned in a second-place time of 2:04.99 in the 2x100 backstroke relay. Patterson said both swimmers looked strong.
Wrapping up the varsity competition with the traditional 400 freestyle relay race, NCMP was second. The foursome of Nedder, Meyer, Miller and Lee had a time of 3:47.92.
“This relay has so much potential,” Patterson said. “We just all need to get on the same page at the same time.
“We had many good JV swims with a few guys doing events for the first time ever or first time this season. Newcomer Zach Ort, junior, did his first 200 freestyle and placed third with teammate Landon Heisdorffer.”
Patterson said Parker Sherwood and Mitch Faidley were second in the 200 IM relay as were Dallas Schaeffer and Faidley in the 100 fly relay. These guys earned a lot of team points for NCMP, she said.
“We are excited to go to Des Moines Lincoln on Tuesday for a dual. They are a bit ahead of us in the power rankings, so it should be a good battle. We will be slight underdogs, but I’m going to count on my guys to fight hard,” Patterson said.
NCMP has its final home meet Thursday. Senior Night will be at 5:30 p.m. against Ames and Grinnell at Newton’s YMCA.
