Snethen leads Hawk wrestlers in tourney action

MONTEZUMA — Sophomore CJ Snethen won three straight matches after losing his 132-pound quarterfinal to open Saturday’s Montezuma Invitational wrestling tournament.

Snethen was Lynnville-Sully’s top placer at the tournament. He pinned Noah Thomas of North Mahaska in 1:52 to claim third place at 132.

After losing by fall to Jaden Engstrom of Waukee JV, Snethen worked through the consolation bracket pinning Spencer Boots of Pella in 2:51 then edging East Marshall’s Tim Benson 7-6 to reach the third-place match.

Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks finished 10th in the 10-team tournament with 35 points. East Marshall won the team title with 210 points followed by two 3Ateams, Marshalltown with 200.5 and Pella with 174.5 points.

Hawk senior Ty Breeden was fourth at 145 pounds. Breeden opened with a 10-4 decision over Marshalltown’s Deonte Dean then was pinned by Chariton’s Adrian Hill in 1:11.

Breeden pinned Waukee JV’s Marcus Schneider in 1:05 of a consolation semifinal. Breeden was pinned in the third-place match by East Marshall’s Garrett Kerber.

Ben Van Wyk, a senior, placed fifth at 120 for the Hawks. He was pinned by East Marshall’s Kordell Negrete to begin the day and received a bye in the first round of consolation.

Van Wyk lost by a pin in the third period of the consolation semifinal to North Mahaska’s Michael DeJong. Van Wyk won the fifth-place match by a bye.

At 138, freshman Brody Johnson took sixth. He lost by a technical fall, 19-4, to Marshalltown’s Jay Drummer then had a bye. Pleasantville’s Drew Bartels pinned Johnson in 1:42 in a consolation semifinal. Johnson faced Drummer again and was pinned in 28 seconds in the fifth-place match.

Junior Gage Schilling went 0-2 at 182 for Lynnville-Sully, losing by falls to Pella’s Denzel Poulter and East Marshall’s Logan Walton. Freshman Miles Mintle also lost twice by falls at 195 to Waukee JV’s Jacob Martin and East Marshall’s Noah Bandstra.

Next up for the Hawk wrestlers is a tournament on Saturday at Saydel, starting at 9 a.m.
