Joseph Dean Revell, 91, of Newton, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018, at Nelson Manor in Newton.

Dean was born Nov. 8, 1926, in Riceville, to Homer William Revell, Sr. and Beulah (Frye) Revell. Dean was raised in Grinnell, where he graduated from high school in 1945. Dean proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II and the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Dean was united in marriage to Violet Jean Buckley Oct. 18, 1952, in Unionville, Mo. They made their home in and around Newton, for 66 years.

Dean was an electrician by trade and retired from the maintenance position at the Newton Post Office in 1989. Dean was an avid hunter, fisherman and camping enthusiast. Dean and Jean spent many winters enjoying both Arizona and Texas. Dean was a Boy Scout leader for 30 years and a ham operator for more than 55 years. Dean belonged to many other organizations including the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic Lodge and the Metz Community Church.

Dean will be lovingly missed by his wife, Jean; his daughter, Carol (David) Laufer; his sons, Joe (Denise) Revell and Jon (Tracey) Revell; his 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his two brothers; and three sisters. Dean was preceded in death by a child in infancy; his parents; two sisters; and three brothers.

A graveside service will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the Van Meter American Legion, Post 403, 910 Main St. in Van Meter. Memorials may be designated to the Metz Community Church or Hospice of the Midwest and may be left at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home.
