Carol Wayne “Sikes” Salyers, 86, of Newton, died Sunday, July 15, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20 at the First Baptist Church in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday. Memorials to Newton Dollars for Scholars, Jasper County Veteran’s Fund, Progress Industries or the First Baptist Church may be left at the church during the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Carol, the son of William and Leta (Harris) Salyers, was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Turner. He grew up in Grinnell. Carol attended Grinnell Schools and then began his service to his country in the U.S. Air Force in 1952. While in the service he was stationed in Africa before returning home to Grinnell for a short time. While he was home he met Anna Belle “Ann” Massengale. Carol then was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in California and after a short time Ann joined him and they were united in marriage Sept. 23, 1955, in Kingman, Ariz. After his discharge in 1956, they returned home to Grinnell, where they lived until 1965, when they moved to Newton. Carol worked at the Maytag Company for 26 years, retiring in 1981. After retirement Carol and Ann enjoyed wintering in Texas for many years.

Carol was a member of the First Baptist Church, the UAW Local 997 and the Izaak Walton League. He was an accomplished mechanic and was the proud owner of a 1928 Model A. Carol enjoyed fixing and tinkering with things and never needed to call a repair man as he was able to fix anything. Carol was also very particular about his yard and garden. He was a devoted and loving husband, dad, grandpa and great-grandpa.

Carol is survived by his wife, Ann Salyers of Newton; children, Carol Salyers, Jr. of Newton, Diane (Doyle) Siglin of Ankeny, Sue McCuen of Altoona and Mike (Cheryl) Salyers of Newton; grandchildren, Lindsay (Aron) Barwick, Mindy (Ryan) Clift, Hillary McCuen, George McCuen and Max Salyers; and his great-grandchildren, Nolan, Dillyn, Reid, Penelope and Maya. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Darrell and William Salyers.
