Kulis resigns from Newton City Council

Councilwomen plans to relocate to Cedar Rapids

Councilwoman Miranda Kulis announced her resignation from the Newton City Council on Monday. Kulis has served in an at-large seat since her election in 2015.

“I have accepted a new position with a staffing firm as a staffing manager, which better aligns with my career plans and goals,” Kulis said. “Unfortunately, this career opportunity requires me to relocate to the Cedar Rapids area.”

Her final day at the current position is Friday.

“I would really like to thank my friends, family, city staff and the community of Newton for the support they have given me and the amazing opportunities I have had in my four years here,” Kulis said. “I would also like to take the opportunity to encourage those who are interested in further serving to get involved either through volunteering or other civic engagement options.”

Fellow council members gave their well-wishes to Kulis as she heads east for the next chapter in her life.

“You’ve done a lot of wonderful things Miranda, thank you for your service to the community,” councilman Craig Trotter said.

To fill the vacated seat, the council will have the option of appointing an individual to the position or holding a special election later in the year. Mayor Mike Hansen was absent Monday night, and the council did not discuss which route they plan to take on replacing Kulis for the remainder of her term.
