Prairie City-Monroe girls and boys won in Heart of Iowa Conference action while Baxter split a Iowa Star Conference twin bill.

Class 4A No. 15 Dallas Center-Grimes girls 52, Newton girls 37

Newton High’s Cardinal girls had the Class 4A No. 15 Dallas Center-Grimes Fillies right where they wanted the Fillies. Newton held a 30-26 lead at home with 2:43 left in the third quarter of the Little Hawkeye Conference contest Friday night.

The Cardinals rushed out to an 8-0 lead, but they couldn’t hold onto the advantage in the final 10 minutes of action. The Fillies’ senior guard Jenna Borchers had been held in check by the Cardinals with only four first half points.

Newton trailed 34-32 with 19 seconds left in the third quarter. DCG outscored Newton 18-5 in the last 8:01 of the game. Borchers it all four of her 3-point field goals in a 14-point flurry in the fourth quarter — quarter in which the Fillies scored 15 points to pull away for the 52-37 win.

“We played a very, very nice first half. Our kids played hard all the way after a win the night before in a game we didn’t finishing well,” Newton head coach Brandon Sharp said. “The game came down to us not keeping track of the ball and us losing their best player, who scored 19 of her 23 points in the second half.”

Newton opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers by Peyton Maher and Randi Walters. Ali Bestell scored a bucket on the inside to put the Cardinals up 8-0. A basket by Jordan Cunningham at the 4:05 mark of the first quarter to put DCG on the scoreboard.

The Cardinals were in front 14-11 after one quarter of play. The teams were tied at 16-all with 6:47 left, but Maher’s second trey broke it followed by a basket by Anna Forsyth. A transition bucket by Rachel Rhoads opened a Newton lead of 23-18.

The Fillies got a free throw from Mallory Vroegh and a basket by Cunningham to close the gap by the break. Newton was up 23-21 at halftime.

After DCG went up 25-23, Newton had a basket by Walters, a 3-pointer by Marcelina Marvelli and another field goal by Walters to regain the lead, 30-26. The Fillies went on an 11-2 run including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Vroegh to lead 37-32 at the end of the third quarter.

Then Borchers took over the game for DCG, hitting three straight treys. She scored 14 consecutive points to salt away the win for the Fillies.

Sharp said his team had 25 turnovers in the game with 15 coming in the second half. Newton was 16-of-34 shooting from the field, but the turnovers limited his team’s ability to score, he said.

Walters finished with 11 points and five rebounds for Newton. Forsyth scored eight points, grabbed seven rebounds and and three assists. Marvelli handed out six assists and Bestell grabbed 10 rebounds.

To go with Borchers’ 23 points, the Fillies got 10 points from Vroegh. The Fillies went 9-of-15 from the free-throw line.

Newton lost 53-47 in the junior varsity game. Meg Callaghan had 18 points and Kameron Nehring scored 17 points for the Cardinals.

The Cardinal varsity fell to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in Little Hawkeye Conference play. They travel to Grinnell next Friday in conference action.

Dallas Center-Grimes boys 63, Newton boys 43

There are no night offs in the Little Hawkeye Conference, according to Newton High boys’ head coach Bill Liley. Newton’s Cardinals came up short at home Friday against the visiting Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs.

“We’re a young basketball team and it’s going to be a roller coaster ride for a little bit until we get things settled, and tonight was one of those,” Liley said after the Mustangs bolted late for a 63-43 win over the Cardinals.

“This was a young team which is not very deep playing back-to-back nights and running out of gas. Emotionally after that call to end the first half, I think going into halftime, we were about done,” Liley said.

It was a close game with Newton leading 14-9 after one quarter. The Cardinals pushed out to a 21-12 lead on seven consecutive points by Garrett Sturtz to open the second period.

From the 5-minute mark of the second quarter, the Mustangs a 12-0 run to finish the first half. Newton was down 22-21 with 1:13 left and had the basketball. Tyler Cooney stole the basketball with less than 10 seconds on the clock.

Cooney broke for a fastbreak layup, but was fouled at the buzzer by Sturtz, who was going for the block of the shot. Liley disagreed with the call but Cooney sank two free throws to lift DCG to a 24-21 halftime lead.

Grant Garvis, who began the game for Newton with a 3-pointer, hit two free throws to start the third quarter. Aaron Bartels tied the game at 26-all by downing three free throws with 7:11 on the clock.

After falling behind again, Bartels scored off a steal by Garvis then Garvis drilled another 3-pointer to knot the score up. Sturtz scored with 4:11 left in the third period for a 33-31 Newton lead.

Over the next 12 minutes of the game, the Mustangs outscored the cardinal 32-10. The Mustangs were up 45-36 with 5:42 left in the game when another call went DCG’s way and Liley was accessed a technical foul.

“Uncharacteristic of things we’ve had go on as far as this program since I’ve been here, I’ve only had three technicals since I’ve gotten to Newton. I felt like I needed to protect my players and I needed those guys (the officials) to know I disagreed,” Liley said.

Newton wasn’t able to mount a comeback from the 12-point deficit in the final five minutes, losing for the first time this season. The shots were not falling for the Cardinals on Friday night.

Sturtz scored 19 points to lead Newton. Garvis had 10 points. The Cardinals had four 3-pointers in the game, two each by Sturtz and Garvis. Newton went 13-of-18 at the free-throw line.

Dallas Center-Grimes had four players score in double figures led by Jordan Humphreys with 16 points and Damon Clapper with 13 points. Steve Borneman and Cooney each had 12 points.

Newton (3-1) will take a 1-1 Little Hawkeye Conference mark into next Friday’s game at Grinnell.
