Hawk softball wins one, loses one in Carlisle tourney

CARLISLE — Wrapping up their regular season Saturday, Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks played in a softball tournament hosted by Class 4A ninth-ranked Carlisle. The Hawks, a 1A team, went 1-1 in Saturday’s event.

Lynnville-Sully dropped a 3-2 decision to Carlisle. The Hawks outlasted Saydel, a 3A team, 6-5.

Lynnville-Sully finished the regular season at 17-11. The Hawks host a second-round game in the 1A Region 3 tournament at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Sully. They will play the winner of Monday’s regional opener between Colo-NESCO and GMG.

Carlisle’s Wildcats scratched out two runs in the first inning against the Hawks. Lynnville-Sully pushed a run across the plate in the second to make it 2-1.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 3-1 in the third inning. The Hawks closed the gap to one run again by scoring once in the sixth.

Freshman Mallory Loftus took the pitching loss, allowing five hits and striking out four. She was 3-for-3 with three singles for the Hawks.

Sophomore Shiloh Cunningham connected for a double and a triple. Eighth-grader Korinne Jansen hit two singles. McKinley Conover, a junior, and freshman Janelle Rozendaal each had a base hit.

Saydel held a 3-2 lead over Lynnville-Sully at the end of the first innings. The Hawks struck for four runs in the fourth to climb to a 6-3 advantage. Saydel scored two runs in the sixth but got no closer.

Loftus picked up the win in relief of starter Caitlin Alberts, an eighth-grader. Alberts was charged with three runs on one hit and four walks, and had two strikeouts in one inning of work.

Loftus went 4 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. She notched four strikeouts. Conover pitched two-thirds of an inning.

Loftus had two singles in the game against Saydel. Hitting a single each were sophomore Carson Fisk, senior Brenna Lanser, Cunningham, Rozendaal and senior Haley James.
