In celebration of the lives and home of one of 1880’s most prominent Des Moines families, the Des Moines Women’s Club is hosting a Hoyt Sherman Family Reunion the afternoon of April 23.
Join the cast of reenactors who will be portraying Major Hoyt and Sara Sherman, along with family friend Major Samuel Byers and Hoyt’s equally famous brother General William Tecumseh Sherman, as they reflect on their Ohio childhood, early adult life, Civil War successes and Des Moines’ progress.
Hoyt and Sara will be entertaining throughout their celebrated, historic mansion from 3 to 5 p.m. Plan to join them for refreshments, reflections, and revelry at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines' Sherman Hill neighborhood, 1501 Woodland Ave., 50309. Tickets are $20 and may be purchased from the club online at www.desmoineswomensclub.com/reunion.
Hoyt Sherman Place has been the home of the Des Moines Women’s Club since 1907. Founded in 1885, The Des Moines Women’s Club raised the funds to build Des Moines’ first public art museum at Hoyt Sherman Place.
The Women’s club continued their fundraising efforts over the next two decades and in 1923 completed the construction of a 2nd gallery called the Byers Room and a magnificent 1400 Seat Theater. Thanks to the early efforts of the members of the Des Moines Women’s Club, Hoyt Sherman Place is still able to create outstanding experiences for the cultural, historic, and educational benefit of Central Iowa, its residents and communities.
