Newton High’s freshmen opened their high school football careers with a win at home Friday. The Cardinals scored 31 points in the first half and it stood for a 31-0 victory over visiting Ottumwa.
“The boys did a good job to come out with a victory,” Newton freshman head coach Trent Powers said. “We have a lot of room for improvement, and I think we will see that in our next couple of games.”
Newton scored two touchdowns and two two-point conversions in the first quarter to take a 16-0 lead. The Cardinals tallied two more touchdowns and one two-point conversion for 15 points in the second period.
Logan Cummins rushed for 105 yards on seven carries, scoring a touchdown and two two-point conversions. Jeremiah Johnson had a rushing touchdown, gaining 41 yards on five carries for the game.
Dylan Farver scored a touchdown on the ground and had two carries for 17 yards in the game. Dalton Altemeier rushed for 20 yards on two carries and had a two-point conversion.
Jarrett Antle carried the ball seven times for 45 yards. Canaan Terpstra had 31 yards on three carries.
Newton quarterback Lyle Long was 1-of-2 passing. The completion was a 36-yard touchdown pass to William Cheng.
Cheng helped lead the Cardinal defense with five tackles and broke up a pass. Lane Bach recorded four tackles. Destin Schroder had three tackles and recovered a fumble. Making three tackles each were Quintail Coley, Altemeier and Camden Winther.
Newton (1-0) hosts Waterloo East at 4:45 p.m. Friday at H. A. Lynn Stadium.
