CEDAR FALLS — Track season got underway for Newton High’s Cardinal girls Monday at the University of Northern Iowa’s 2016 Girls’ A.D. Dickinson Relays. The Cardinal competed in the relays at the UNI Dome.
Newton’s girls produced three top-20 performances at the first indoor meet of their season. At the Dickinson Relays, the top three finishers in each event receive awards.
Senior Grace Coen had the top performance of the Relays for the Cardinals. Coen finished fourth in the 1,500-meter run in 4 minutes, 58.94 seconds.
Morgann Eide, a sophomore, posted a 10.16-second time in the 60-meter hurdle preliminaries, qualifying for the finals. Eide placed 14th overall in 10.15 seconds.
Sophomore Liz McVey ran the hurdles in 10.78 seconds for 45th and senior Fran Lucas was 91st in 11.67 seconds. There were 134 competitors in the hurdles.
The Cardinals’ 4x200-meter relay team of seniors Sydney Jenkins and Leela Spencer and sophomore Alexis Stout and McVey placed 19th out of 58 teams. They combined for a time of 1:54.33.
Sophomores Haley Revell and Ali Bestell competed in the shot put with 127 others. Revell took 23rd with a throw of 34 feet, 2 inches. Bestell was 67th at 27’9.5”. Freshman Abbie Barr tied for 24th in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4’8”, while sophomore Hannah Boecker tied for 40th at 4’6”.
Barr and Boecker ran in the 400-meter dash for the Cardinals. Barr finished 82nd and Boecker was 87th out of 147 runners in 1:10.73 and 1:10.99, respectively.
In the 60-meter dash, Senior Elise Axtell was 122nd in 9.21 seconds, followed by Fran Lucas in 141st and sophomore Audrey Lucas in 142nd, both at 9.55 seconds.
There were 23 heats of the 200-meter dash. Spencer ran fourth in her heat in 28.58 second while Axtell was fourth in her heat at 31.16 seconds and sophomore Randi Walters was fifth in her heat at 31.58 seconds.
Junior Vlada Osadcha ran the 800-meter race in 2:50.52 and Audrey Lucas finished the distance in 3:00.45. The Cardinals’ 4x400 relay team of Jenkins, Stout, Walters and Coen turned in a time of 4:32.36.
The Cardinal girls travel to Ames Monday for the Iowa State University High School Classic. They concluded their indoor schedule on March 17 in the Little Hawkeye Conference Indoor Championships at Grinnell College.
