Wrapping up competition for the 2015 season, the Newton Trap Team is at the Iowa State Trap Meet in Cedar Falls this week. There were 10 members of the team competing in the state trap meet Thursday and Friday.
The Cardinals went to Waukee May 30 for the Iowa State Skeet Championships held at the New Pioneer Gun Club. Newton competed against teams from Des Moines, Oskaloosa, Pella, Carroll County, Maquoketa, North Mahaska, Albia, South East Iowa and Graettinger-Terril.
Newton’s squad of Bryce Romick, Evan Cook and Dawson Cobler shot a combined score of 213 targets out of 300. The squad finished 21st out of 23 in the event.
Romick posted Newton’s highest individual score of 77 out of 100 targets. He placed 47th out of 71 shooters in the senior varsity male division.
“We are not strong competitors in skeet because of our limited ability to practice skeet shooting,” said Paul Klein, Newton Trap Team head coach. “I think all of the members who shot skeet this season have shown great improvement.”
Following the state trap meet this week, the Newton Trap Team finished their state competition at the sporting clays event on June 20 at Oskaloosa.
