Annual YMCA Easter egg hunt is Saturday

The annual Easter egg hunt at the YMCA is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday.

Infants through children in the sixth grade are invited to bring their baskets and gather as many candy-filled eggs as they can carry at the free event. As a special treat, the Easter Bunny will make a visit to meet with children and partake in the hunt.

“Easter is early this year, which you always worry about the weather, so we pushed back as far as we could,” said Karen Parman, membership and marketing director at the YMCA.

The event will be held behind the YMCA, 1701 S. Eighth Ave. E., on the soccer fields with the children divided into separate areas by age. The Easter eggs are provided by Hy-Vee for the third year in a row.

Before joining forces, both Hy-Vee and the YMCA were hosting egg hunts, said Newton Hy-Vee Store Manager Todd Fox. After deciding to bring the two events together, Hy-Vee began providing the candy and eggs, he said.

This year, the store is providing 5,000 eggs filled with candy for kids to hunt down. Luckily for everyone at Hy-Vee, the eggs are ordered pre-filled and ready to go on arrival.

As of press time, Saturday’s weather forecast calls for sunny skies and a high of 65 degrees. Should the weather turn rainy, activities will be moved inside of the YMCA. Parking is available in the YMCA lots. For more information contact the YMCA at 641-792-4006.
