The Newton YMCA has been working hard to upgrade many amenities that became outdated or were no longer working correctly. One of the biggest and most noticeable was the upgrade to the sauna, located by the pool.
Completed in early December, the entire sauna was replaced with new finishes for the members to enjoy. Dan Cibula of DC Construction, of Kellogg completed the work.
Next to the sauna, the hot tub got a complete facelift with new mechanicals through out and a completely new tiled surface. There is also a new mural along with the words “Just Breathe” painted on the wall.
“It was just the bane of our existence. It is old and the mechanicals just have been kind of wearing out on them, more times down than it was running. Which didn’t make people very happy,” said Karen Parman, membership and marketing director at the YMCA.
The remodel, which was completed in mid-March, included the hot tub along with the sauna, which opened at the same time as the hot tub because of proximity.
“It’s huge. It’s deep; it is wonderful,” Parman said.
All four of the locker rooms got makeovers during the last several months. The men’s and women’s locker rooms got new lockers, a fresh paint job and new floors. It was a much needed upgrade to the area, which had been the same since the last remodel in 1986.
“It is just much, much nicer,” Parman said.
The boy’s and girl’s locker rooms also got new paint along with updated countertops and new carpet. A previous makeover took place in 2009 when new lockers were installed in both rooms.
A project that had many people excited was the resurfacing of the indoor track. The previous track had lost a lot of its give in the rubber and was showing signs of natural wear and tear. The new track, which was completed at the end of Feb., is cardinal red instead of black, for a little home town pride.
