Cardinal wrestling wins 4, loses 1 at EBF Duals

EDDYVILLE — With a 4-1 run through Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Duals, Newton High’s wrestling team started the 2015 portion of its season Saturday.

“Overall, the kids had a great mindset and wrestled extremely hard. We are excited to watch some of our younger guys grow and turn the corner hear after a productive winter break,” said Andy Swedenhjelm, Newton head coach.

“We had multiple wrestlers do really well led by Bryce Tish who went 5-0 on the day as well as Hunter Versteegh who went 5-0 on the day and had a win over the No. 3-ranked kid from Southeast Warren.”

Newton beat Des Moines East 54-30, defeated North Mahaska 58-12, beat Mount Pleasant 43-36 and edged out Waukee 37-33. Southeast Warren defeated Newton 54-27.

Versteegh, a junior, is Newton’s varsity 113-pounder. He defeated Brady Kiner of Southeast Warren 11-5. Versteegh split time at 113 and 120 during Saturday’s competition. He pinned Jack Smith of Waukee at 120 at the end of the first period. Versteegh won by forfeit at 120 against Mount Pleasant and scored two forfeit wins at 113 against Des Moines East and North Mahaska.

Tish captured five wins on the mat — four by pins — for Newton at 145 pounds. Against Southeast Warren, Tish pinned Tanner Flesher in 1 minute, 2 seconds. He pinned Thomas Shehan of Des Moines East in 3:19, Cole Spoelstra of North Mahaska in 1:05 and Hamilton Wentworth of Waukee.

Tish trailed Rob Pohren of Mount Pleasant 2-0 after one period. Tish scored a point on an escape in the second period then took a 3-2 lead with a takedown. Tish protected his lead in the third period to win 3-2.

Jonathon Lawton went 5-0 with two forfeit wins at 113 and one forfeit win at 120. Lawton won by major decision, 14-3, over Waukee’s Trevor Imm at 113 and pinned Des Moines East at 120.

Brady Smith at 152, Duncan Lee at 195 and Jordan Henning at 220 each went 4-1 on the day. Parker Schuster had a 3-2 day at 126 pounds while Caden Manning turned in a 2-3 day at 285.

At 138, Logan Zibert went 1-2 and Reece Thurman went 1-1 for Newton. Ross Hull had a 2-1 day at 106 and Aren Sorensen was 1-1 at 106. Tristin Langmaid wrestling at 160 and Harley Walker at 170 for the Cardinals each went 1-4.

Newton was scheduled goto Ames for a double dual with Ames and Urbandale Monday. That has been postponed until Jan. 13.The Cardinals go to Oskaloosa Thursday taking on their host and Sigourney.
