Students participate in SCIBA contest

On Saturday, Feb. 15, Newton fifth- through eighth-grade band students participated in the annual South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association Elementary and Middle School Solo and Ensemble contest at Berg Middle School in Newton.

Students performed for accredited music specialists and received ratings, comments and medals based upon the quality of their performances. Ratings are: 1+ highly superior, 1 excellent, 2 good, and 3 fair. Students that participated received the following ratings:

In addition to these ratings, adjudicators recognize outstanding performances in their center by selecting students to receive the prestigious Outstanding Performance Award. Each adjudicator listens to approximately 50 entries before narrowing the field to the most outstanding in their contest center. This year, Giavanna Gast, sixth-grade alto saxophone solo; Andrea Freeman, eighth-grade clarinet solo; Laura Wyre, seventh-grade percussion solo; Matt Moran, seventh-grade trumpet solo; David Lopez-Sanders, eighth-grade baritone solo; Chloe Pak, seventh-grade flute solo; Jacob Murphy, seventh-grade alto sax solo; and Preston Sherwood, eighth-grade percussion solo were recipients of the Outstanding Performance Award.

Accompanists for the contestants include: Jan Bacchus, Andrea Callaghan, Glenda Duffus, Diane Fuller, Jane Johnson, Marcia Kearney and Gina Reed.

Band directors for the elementary and middle school band students are Seth Banwell, Michelle Banwell and Deb Stoulil.
