The 16th session of the Summer Youth Police Academy began July 30, and graduated on August 9, 2012. The academy is targeted for students entering 6th - 8th grade in the fall of 2012, and met in four one-hour-long sessions. The goal of the Summer Youth Police Academy is to promote youth interest in law enforcement as a career.
Training this year included a tour of the police department facility and a presentation about requirements to enter the law enforcement field. Students also learned about crime scene identification, which included fingerprinting and evidence handling. Students were taught how police officers make safe traffic stops as well writing warnings and citations based on a traffic violation. On the final day, students learned arrest and control procedures as well as handcuffing and officer safety procedures.
