Twenty-three athletes from the Newton YMCA Penguin Swim Team will dive into competition at the YMCA’s State Swim Meet in Marshalltown.
The swimmers, who are part of the Penguin winter squad, qualified for state competition during a sectional meet in Waukee on Feb. 20. The pool of 23 swimmers, the largest group sent to state in the Newton Y’s history, will compete in a variety of events during the two-day meet on March 5 and 6, under the direction of coaches Luke Anderson, Erin Lewis, Rachel Guilaume and Sam Hoffert.
“The Y is very excited and supportive about all the kids who will be swimming,” said Sue Field, Newton YMCA Aquatics Director. “The season was very much a success. In addition to the kids competing at State, all our swimmers did fantastic this season. They worked hard, improved their times and did a great job thanks to their effort and the support of the coaches and swim team parents.”
Those swimming include Izaak Miller, Luke Zaabel, Madison Smith, Chloe Kibbee, Rachel Prendergast, Alexa Bell, Abigail Altman, Sydney Jenkins, Sierra Griffith, Kelsea DeCook, Sarah Prendergast, Jeffrey Fitzgerald, Austin Bunker, Sophie Walker, Henry Jensen, Hannah Scotton, Kora Scotton, Brandon Miller, Sidney Griffith, Elizabeth Myers, Adam Hunter, Luke Norcross and Sid Trotter.
