After leading authorities on a high-speed chase late last year, Brian Ray Hammer was arrested on a warrant Saturday evening for failing to turn himself into jail to begin a two-year sentence.
Deputy Aaron Groves attempted to stop Hammer, 29, on a Jasper County roadway on Sept. 2, 2009, setting off a chase that exceeded 100 miles per hour in a 55-mph zone. Following visual and audio signals to get Hammer to pull over, Groves used pursuit intervention techniques to stop Hammer’s vehicle on Highway F17 and West 72nd Street North.
Hammer was found to be in possession of an 800 mg Ibuprofen — a schedule 5 narcotic — and had a crushed up ephedrine, a precursor to meth, on the passenger seat. He also was found to have a revoked license. Hammer’s license was revoked from a operating while intoxicated test refusal from Oct. 23, 2008.
Hammer pleaded guilty in March to two aggravated misdemeanors — eluding a peace officer and operating a motor vehicle while license was barred — and was sentenced May 3. Both counts carry a maximum sentence of two years and will run concurrently.
Since his September 2009 arrest, Hammer was stopped twice by Newton police for driving while his license was barred.
In addition to beginning his jail sentence Saturday, Hammer was ordered in April to pay a fine of $625 and additional court fees.

David B. Hagen, 20, pleaded guilty to domestic abuse and was sentenced Wednesday to two days in jail and ordered to pay a $315 fine in addition to other restitution fees.
The sentence is a result of a March 16 incident in which a verbal argument with a female escalated into Hagen “pinning her against a wall and choking her almost to the point to her losing consciousness,” the report states. Hagen also slapped the victim to the ground, causing “red marks and bruising” to the victim’s neck, arms and face.
Hagen was also ordered to enroll in a Batterers Education Program.

Eleanor L. Hermes, 30, pleaded guilty to her third possession of marijuana charge and was given a two-year sentence in jail Wednesday that was suspended to 20 days.
The sentence is a result of a Aug. 20, 2009, incident in which the MINE task force executed a search warrant of Hermes’ residence. Authorities found 6.9 grams of marijuana, numerous pipes with residue, and four prescription pills — two oxycodone, one hydrocodone and one codeine — with no prescription.
Hermes was ordered to pay a $625 fine, given two years probation and had her license revoked for 180 days. She will also be required to pay a $125 surcharge and additional fees.

Presten D. Conner, 19, pleaded guilty to drug possession Wednesday and was given fines of $325 and $125 as well as sentenced to two days in jail.
The sentence is a result of a Feb. 28 incident in which law enforcement executed a search warrant of Conner’s residence. Authorities found an undetermined amount of marijuana as well as paraphernalia in the residence, the report states.
Conner will have his license revoked for 180 days except for work and must also pay additional fees to the court.
