Jasper County Historical Society will celebrate 35th anniversary

Special to the Daily News The Jasper County Historical Society will be hosting a 35th anniversary and general meeting on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Jasper County Museum, 1700 S. 15th Ave. W. After several attempts to organize over the years, a steering committee in 1973 reactived the Jasper County Historical Society and the original office located in the basement of First Newton National Bank with Jack Wormley as president. The group broke ground for the museum building site on April 30, 1978, with a matched team of horses owned by Bernard Kooistra of rural Lynnville. Herb Rucker, chairman of the historical museum building committee, manned the “slip” used in early country road construction and made several passes through the new site near the Interstate 80 and Highway 14 interchange. Members and guests were invited to turn a spade of dirt to close the ceremony, which was attended by 160 people. The genral meeting Sunday will consist of the election of board of directors and committee reports, which will preceed the program with photos and brief history of hte past 35 years. All members and friends of the museum are invited to attend.
