Elmer E. Doak

Elmer E. Doak, 95. of Newton died Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Skiff Medical Center Monarch Wing in Newton. Funeral services will be at 11a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Roger Russell of Wittemberg Church in rural Newton. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Wittemberg Cemetery in rural Newton. Memorials to the Wittemberg Cemetery Association, the Wittemberg Church or to the Jasper County Historical Society may be left at the funeral home. A 1931 graduate of Newton Senior High School, Elmer was born on June 30, 1913, in rural Newton. He was the son of William S. and Lilyan (Carpenter) Doak. Lifetime resident of Newton, Elmer was united in marriage with Mildred A. Carder on Sept. 16, 1934, in Newton. Elmer worked in machining at the Maytag Company for 35 years, retiring in 1975. Elmer was a member of the Wittemberg Church, Trustee of the Wittemberg Cemetery Association, past member of the Knights of Pythias, Lifetime member of the Jasper County Historical Society, Maytag Bowling League, and he had served as a solicitor for the Maytag Consolidated Fund Drive and helped with numerous Employee Council activities. Elmer enjoyed bowling, gardening, reading and was a Civil War buff. Survivors include his son, Richard (Mary Lou) Doak of Polk City; two daughters, Patricia (Verland) Beckham and Karen Doak, both of Newton; eight grandchildren: 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mildred in 1985; three brothers, Leslie, Robert, and Clark Doak; and a sister, Esther Loupee.*
