’Twas two months before Christmas and all through the town, shoppers were preparing for the annual open house.

To help kick start the holiday shopping season, the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber’s Retail Committee is hosting the annual Downtown Newton Open House Sunday. The event, which takes place the first Sunday of November, will feature special holiday activities for the entire family.

“It is our please to sponsor this event again,” said Annette West, Chamber executive director.

West said the event will feature strolling carolers, in-store specials, holiday music and carriage rides sponsored by Park Centre. The man in red also will make a special visit from the North Pole to get wish lists from children during the event Sunday.

Along with getting good deals, West said supporting the local merchants and restaurants is a way to help bolster the community as well.

“It’s a great way to shop local and support your local economy because when you spend money here in turn it supports local infrastructure, schools and local business owners,” West said.

Events will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday and continue until 5 p.m.

“It’s gonna be a fun time to come out and preview and buy holiday merchandise from our local merchants,” she said.
