Veronica Ann Chance, the daughter of William Charles Johnson and Naomi Lilly Egy, was born Dec. 15, 1929, in Stuart, Iowa. She graduated from Stuart High School with the class of 1947. On Jan. 2, 1950, Veronica was united in marriage with Frank L. Chance in Stuart. She had worked as a telephone operator, was a stay at home mom and had worked as a certified nursing assistant at Skiff Medical Center for the past 37 years. Veronica enjoyed her vegetable garden, bowling, computer solitaire and word search puzzles. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Women’s Bowling Association and the Skiff bowling team. Veronica died on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at her home in Newton. She was 79 years old. Veronica was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank on Dec. 15, 1969; a granddaughter, Emily Chance; a great-granddaughter, Chrystal Morrow; her brother, Bill Johnson; and her sisters, Naomi Bashor, Cecelia Schissel and Mary Schwarz. Those left to honor Veronica’s memory include her children, Beverly (Jerry) Stewart, Charles L. Chance, Kenny Chance, Carolyn (Pat) Sullivan, Richard Chance, Tim (Debbie) Chance, all of Newton; her 10 grandchildren; her 20 great-grandchildren; her two great-great-grandchildren; and her sister, Catherine Mataya of Des Moines. A funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton. Friends may greet the family on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Memorials may be designated to Hospice of Jasper County or Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
