GREENFIELD — The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter cross country season ended short of the state meet Monday after no one qualified in the top 10 of the district meet at Greenfield Golf and Country Club.

The top 10 runners advance to state, but the best finish for the Raiders was senior Nathan Poage, who came across in 21st with a time of 19:25.

“It’s always a little disappointing to not have anyone qualify for the state meet, but our boys and girls all gave 100 percent and did the best they could do,” CMB coach Jerry Meinerts said. “Nathan Poage had a great season and a great career for us, and we will definitely miss him next year as well as Thomas Howell, who also is a senior.”

The Raiders finished 10th as a team in the boys standings as they scored 245 points. East Marshall won the meet with 65 points, while Pella Christian came in second with 69. Also qualifying for the state meet was Albia, which scored 95 points.

CMB competed well despite dealing with injuries and illness. They also ran on a pretty tough course that featured plenty of hills.

“We’ve had some guys sick and injured all week, and I don’t like to make excuses because I am sure a lot of other teams are in the same boat,” Meinerts said. “The guys were hoping to run their best times of the year, but once they walked the course, I think they kind of psyched themselves out a little bit.”

Finishing behind Poage was junior Jacob Ross, who came across in 40th with a time of 20:03. Terry Young was next in 53rd, Dylan DeJong was 60th and Jon Reinhold was the final counting place in 71st.

On the girls side, the Raiders were led by sophomore Katelyn Findlay in 31st. She crossed the line in 18:53, which was 26 seconds faster than sophomore teammate Sarah Galbraith, who came in 36th.

Freshman Kayla Hennick was 48th with a time of 20:07.

The future is bright for CMB as the team returns five boys and all three girls from this year’s squad.
