Cyclocross racing set at Maytag Park

Special to Daily News Cyclocross bicycle racing returns to Newton on Sunday at Maytag Park. Since 2001, Newton has been a hotbed of regional cyclocross through the efforts of Newton natives Rob Ver Steegh and Marc Hollander. The action-packed races around a one-mile course in Maytag Park has been a pleasant surprise for visitors to the park for several years. Racers compete for cash prizes and enjoy cheering on their friends and fellow racers. The bicycles are modified from a traditional road bicycle with larger tires to keep participants in control over uneven terrain at high speeds. Racers are required to dismount their cycle and run for portions of each lap as well.  Anyone is welcome to participate, whether new to the sport or racing
