Sponsor packets available for CROP Walk on Oct. 5The 2008 CROP Walk is scheduled for Oct. 5, with participants in Newton once again walking from the Jasper County Courthouse in a circular route to the Salvation Army for refreshments. Area churches have packets for walkers to use when obtaining sponsors for their walking. Anyone interested in joining the walk may contact their church for information. Jasper County has continued to be one of the top 10 counties in Iowa in money pledged and given to the fight against world and local hunger. CROP is a division of Church World Service that involves many religions working together to help end poverty not only by providing food to those in need but also by assisting them in learning and having the tools to feed themselves. Last year, Jasper County residents raised more than $10,000 for the CROP Walk. Participants also are asked to bring non-perishable food for the Salvation Army Food Pantry to help local residents in need. For more information, contact Terry Townsend at 792-3637, Barb Dunlavy at 792-8296 or Kay Koeppen (for sponsor packets) at 792-7923. |
