Vernon rallies Dems in Newton

Iowa’s Democratic candidate for Lt. Gov. Monica Vernon visits with volunteer Cindy Pollard, of Newton and Chaz Allen Campaign District Coordinator Daniel Wasta Saturday in Newton at the Jasper County Democratic Party’s headquarters. Newton was Vernon’s first of four stops Saturday during the Iowa Democratic Party’s 99 counties in 24 hours event. Candidates and party officials split the map Saturday in a push to excite their voter base with nine days to go until Election Day. Volunteers told Vernon that there are still 1,000 absentee ballots waiting to be cast in Jasper County as of Saturday. Vernon’s visit comes on the heals of a nine-day bus tour with Gubernatorial running mate Jack Hatch (D-Des Moines). Their Republican opponents and incumbents Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds are currently on a 12-day trip across the state. Election Day is Nov. 4.
