Mustangs lose; advance to playoffs

ALLEMAN — Prairie City-Monroe’s Mustangs are in the Class 2A playoffs, but after losing to North Polk 42-20 Friday night the Mustangs will be a No. 4 seed. North Polk and PCM went into Friday’s regular-season finale tied (3-2) in Class 2A District 7 action behind CMB (6-0) and Albia (5-1).

PCM travels to Williamsburg Wednesday in the first round of Class 2A playoffs. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

The Mustangs let a 17-0 lead slip away. They had touchdown runs by senior running back Ronnie Marshall and junior quarterback Logan Gilman and a field goal by Chase Wilkie.

North Polk’s Comets came right back striking through the air. Blake Brauer and Matt Cox hooked up for three touchdown passes to take a 21-17 lead. Brauer was 10-of-15 for 209 yards passing on the night and Cox had seven catches for 186 yards.

Before halftime, Wilkie kicked a 47-yard field goal for the Mustangs. Down by one point, 21-20, the Mustangs’ offense went dormant in the second half.

The Comets scored on a 54-yard run by Cox, a 5-yard run by Brauer, a 6-yard run by Alex White and a 36-yard run by Mayson Mayfield, who rushed for 122 yards on 22 carries.
