Iowa city considers banning pets from parks

DURANT — An eastern Iowa city may ban pets from its parks because of complaints about owners failing to pick up after their dogs.

The Durant City Council will vote Monday on the ban. City officials say there have been several complaints about pet problems at the parks. Resident Linda Oertel objected the proposed ban at a city council meeting earlier this month.

But Mayor Dawn Smith says a few offenders may have ruined it for everyone.

The proposed ban includes fines of $50 for the first offense, $100 for the second offense and $200 for all subsequent violations.
