BlueJays outlast Cardinal freshmen

Newton High’s freshmen just couldn’t keep pace with Bondurant-Farrar in a high-scoring football game Friday night. The gap came in the middle two quarters and the BlueJays used a 21-0 run to gain the advantage for the 49-30 win.

“It was a fast paced and exciting freshman football game. We executed very well on offense gaining over 300 total yards,” said Trent Powers, Newton freshman coach. ”We could not stop them on defense. We had boys in the right positions a lot of the times, but we did not make the tackle.”

The teams were deadlocked, 14-14, after one quarter. Bondurant-Farrar scored two touchdowns in the second period and one in the third while holding Newton scoreless. Newton scored two touchdowns and two two-point conversions in the fourth period, but the BlueJays had another 14-point period.

“Our effort was outstanding and we never stopped fighting to stay in the game. They were a really good football team and found a way to get a couple defensive stops,” Powers said.

Carson Cazett had a 1-yard touchdown run and a 21-yard touchdown reception for Newton. He rushed for 171 yards on 15 carries and had a two-point conversion run.

Jace Lukefahr scored a touchdown from one yard out and rushed four 11 yards on four carries. Josh Miravelles had 70 yards on 11 carries and a two-point conversion run.

Jaron Rush hauled in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Garrett Sturtz, who was 3-of-7 passing for 57 yards. Ryan Constant caught a two-point conversion pass and had a 29-yard reception.

Miravalles and Zach Combs led the Newton defense with five tackles each. Constant made four tackles. Grant Garvis had two tackles and a fumble recovery.

Newton (6-2) ends its season Friday at Nevada.
