CMB boys, Colfax-Mingo girls lead way at HOIC meet

AMES — Running in wet and muddy conditions on the Iowa State University cross country course, six area runners earned all-conference honors at the Heart of Iowa Conference meet Monday afternoon.

Three boys, led by Collins-Maxwell/Baxter’s Mark Deutsch, and three girls, led by Colfax-Mingo’s Dakota Hostetter, placed in the top 14 of the varsity races, earning them medals and conference distinctions.

The Gilbert Tigers won both the boys and girls team titles at the conference meet.

Finishing right behind the Tigers in the boys meet was CMB, who barely edged out Saydel for second place. The Raiders scored 94 points, Saydel 95.

“I am really proud of our guys tonight,” CMB head coach Jerry Meinerts said. “Everyone in our conference was racing for that second place spot (behind Gilbert) and our guys earned that tonight. This was one of those nights, where we really didn’t care about times. The course was in really bad shape, with mud going up hills and mud coming back down the hills; it was hard to really get into a good rhythm and pace, but our guys competed hard with the runners around them.”

Deutsch paced the Raiders yet again, finishing fourth out of 65 runners in 17 minutes, 58.40 seconds. Teammate Colin Thomson joined him in the top 14, placing ninth with a time of 18:36.47. Raider freshman Max Van Maanen almost made it three CMB runners with all-conference honors as he came in 18th in 19:42.97.

Prairie City-Monroe freshman Blaise Winegardner also earned all-conference status and was one of only three freshmen to do so. Winegarnder placed sixth, the highest of the three freshmen, in 18:18.84.

PCM finished eight out of 10 teams in the boys race with 218 points. Colfax-Mingo was 10th with 272.

PCM’s Rachel Peter also earned all-conference by finishing 11th in 17:25.28.

Running for the first time this season as a team, the Tigerhawks finished fourth with 142 points behind three ranked teams — Class 3A No. 4 Gilbert, 2A No. 5 North Polk and 2A No. 9 Greene County.

Dakota and Kennedi Hostetter led Colfax-Mingo. Dakota Hostetter finished fifth, one spot better than a year ago, in 16:42.23, while Kennedi Hostetter earned the last all-conference spot, placing 14th with a time of 17:32.17.

“This was a huge step for the girls as they move towards the state qualifying meet,” Colfax-Mingo head coach Zach Tomas said, noting the girls’ fourth-place finish was the highest by a Tigerhawk squad at a conference meet during his tenure.

Colfax-Mingo narrowly topped fifth-place CMB in the girls team standings, 142-146.

Winter Brown and Heather Jessen paced the Raider girls in 18th and 19th. Brown crossed the finish line in 18:00.01, Jessen in 18:13.46.
