Pella powers past Newton; PCM, CMB, Colfax-Mingo, Lynnville-Sully win

Area teams were pretty successful in Week 7 of the 2014 football season. Newton got overwhelmed by Class 3A top-ranked Pella, but CMB made a play at the end to stay undefeated, Lynnville-Sully wins big on the road while PCM gets a homecoming win and Colfax-Mingo claims victory at home.

Here's the area Week 7 roundup:

Pella 69, Newton 14

Newton High’s Cardinals opened Friday night’s home contest by driving right down the field for a touchdown. The Class 3A No. 9 Cardinals led 3A top-ranked Pella’s Little Dutch 7-0 on J.T. Thongvanh’s 1-yard run into the end zone and Nick Easley’s extra-point kick.

The Little Dutch flexed their muscles from that point on, scoring 62 unanswered points in the first half. Pella beat Newton, 69-14, after leading 62-7 at halftime.

Reese Rosenquist had a 5-yard touchdown run at the end of the game for Newton. The entire second half was played under a continuous clock.

“The one thing we couldn’t let happen was allow them to get going and get in rhythm. They are extremely explosive up front on the offensive line. They get on you and their backs hit that hole running wide open,” said Ed Ergenbright, Newton head coach.

“They are very, very good and made us look bad. I’m proud that none of our kids quit and kept fighting.”

Ergenbright said the Cardinals will take what they can from this game, learn and move on for the final two games of the regular season. Newton steps back into Class 3A District 6 action next Friday at home against Bondourant-Farrar, which lost 37-34 Friday night to Ballard.

“We have an opportunity to win a district championship. We just get better and get prepared for Bondourant-Farrar, which is a very good team.”

Newton is 5-2 on the season, but carry a 3-1 district mark.

The Newton freshmen rolled to a 27-8 win over Pella to go 6-1 on the season.

Lynnville-Sully 48, GMG 0

GARWIN — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks dominated Friday’s Class A District 7 game against the GMG Wolverines. The Hawks kept their hosts winless with a 48-0 victory.

Behind the strong running of junior Sage Ehresman, the Hawks pushed to a 42-0 halftime score. Ehresman had three rushing touchdowns and a kickoff return for a touchdown in the first half. Caden Dunsbergen scored the lone touchdown in the second half on a long run.

“We took care of the football tonight and that made a big difference,” said Mike Parkinson, Lynnville-Sully head coach. “This was a good all round win for us. We needed it, and we saw a lot of positive things tonight.”

Defensively, Parkinson said he was pleased that the Hawks had success in pressuring GMG quarterback all night. It is something the Hawks have struggled to do this season, he said.

Lynnville-Sully improved to 2-3 in district play and 2-5 overall.

The Hawks host North Mahaska next Friday.

Collins-Maxwell/Baxter 21, Albia 20

ALBIA — In a clash of unbeaten teams and a wild fourth quarter that featured blocked kicks on back-to-back plays, Collins-Maxwell/Baxter came out on top.

Trailing 21-14, Albia blocked CMB kicker Joey Nissen's field goal attempt and returned it for a touchdown with about one minute left in the game. On the ensuing play, CMB junior Charles Robertson blocked Albia's extra point attempt, helping the Raiders secure the victory and take sole ownership of the Class 2A District 7 lead.

CMB regained the lead late in the third quarter on a short run by quarterback Hunter McWhirter. McWhirter then connected with Hunter Gunderson for a successful two-point conversion and a 21-14 lead.

CMB's defense limited Albia to a season-low point total. The Blue Demons averaged more than 47 points per game through the first six weeks of the season.

Colfax-Mingo 36, Iowa Valley 22

COLFAX — Colfax-Mingo cruised to its fifth win of the season Friday night in convincing style.

The Tigerhawks scored 59 seconds into the game on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Jared Myers to receiver Jimmy Abell and never looked back.

Myers connected with Abell again with four seconds left in the first half for a 21-0 halftime advantage.

Myers threw four touchdown passes and rushed for a fifth.

Abell led all Colfax-Mingo receivers five catches for 87 yards.

The win ensured Colfax-Mingo it's first winning season since 2008.

Prairie City-Monroe 49, Clarke, Osceola 22

MONROE — Prairie City-Monroe celebrated homecoming in victorious and dominating fashion thanks to a stellar night from quarterback Logan Gilman.

Gilman threw a career-high five touchdown passes as the Mustangs climbed above the .500 mark for the first time this season.

Four of Gilman's touchdown passes came in the first half. The Mustangs led 49-0 at halftime.

The Mustangs (4-3, 3-1) host Albia (6-1, 3-1) next week in a critical Class 2A District 7 matchup.
