Richard A. Miller

In the company of the two favorite women (wife Pat Otis Miller and daughter Karolyn Sutherland) in his life, Richard (Rich) A. Miller left this earthly home Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, to guard the gates of Heaven, as all honorable Marines do. A celebration of life memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at Kimbrell-Stern. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the memorial service. Pastor Donnie Nix and Mrs. Karolyn Sutherland will officiate.

Born Nov. 1, 1946, in Colville, Wash., Rich is preceded in death by his first wife, Billie Jean Miller; his parents, Walt and Thelma Miller; two brothers; and one sister.

Rich graduated high school, attended college for two years and then joined the Marine Corps in 1968, serving more than 21 years before his retirement in 1989. He the continued to serve his beloved Marines working as an engineering technician with civil services at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga., for 13 years before permanently retiring in 2003. Rich had several hobbies he enjoyed – the first being writing short stories and poetry. He loved nature and all outdoor activities, especially hunting and fishing. Rich was a lifetime member of the NRA — a passionate believer in and defender of our second amendment rights. During his many travels he acquired an appreciation for a variety of ethnic foods. Rich ate any and everything placed before him, except grits.

Survivors include his loving family, his wife, Pat Otis-Miller of Albany, Ga.; Dr. Burton and Karolyn Sutherland of Panama City, Fla.; Gary and Rhonda Otis of Griffin, Ga.; Mike and Michelle Otis and their sons Nicholas and Jake of Griffin, Ga.; Lynn and Ron Vroegh of Pella; and Glenda Greason of Port Orange, Fla.; several grandchildren; and a cadre of friends who will miss him terribly. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be made in his memory to your local humane society. Semper Fi.
