Cardinal JV loses

Newton High’s junior varsity football Cardinals put the first points on the scoreboard Monday night at H.A. Lynn Stadium. Unfortunately, it was the only touchdown of the night for the Cardinals as visiting Ballard won 27-7.

Newton’s touchdown came on a 64-yard bolt to the end zone by Jake Bennett on the Cardinals’ first possession of the game. Josh Gulling kicked the extra-point for a 7-0 lead.

Ballard answered to tie it 7-7 and led 14-7 at halftime.

Newton’s offense was stymied after the first drive. The Cardinals had minus-2 yards of offense in the second quarter and 10 yards of offense in the fourth quarter.

Bennett finished with 85 yards of rushing for Newton. Dalton Nevels had 82 yards and Justice Borger rushed for 79 yards.

Keith Steinbach and Austin James led the Newton defense.

Newton’s junior varsity goes to Pella on Monday.
