Newton JV volleyball team goes 3-1

BROOKLYN — Newton High’s junior varsity volleyball team posted a 3-1 mark in a tournament hosted by BGM Saturday.

The Cardinals beat Pella 21-18, 18-21, 15-11, defeated South Tama 21-15, 21-15 and downed host BGM 21-11, 21-18. Grinnell beat Newton 21-13, 21-15.

Lucy Lilienthal delivered 10 kills and five blocks at the net for Newton. She also served five aces and had four digs. Stephanie Hoboheinrich was credited with 20 set assists along with three kills, five digs and seven serving aces.

Audrey Lucas had seven kills for the Cardinals while Adrienne Bergman, Natalie Camp and Jessie Smith each had four kills. Smith also had three blocks at the net. Camp served up nine aces and had nine digs. Lucas had four ace serves and eight digs.

Bergman had three ace serves and nine digs. Carter Lee came up with 11 digs.

“The girls played amazing,” said Mallory Sturtz, Newton junior varsity coach. “We brought up a handful of freshmen, who stepped into their roles and helped provide much needed enthusiasm. I was very proud of the team’s display of effort, discipline, and teamwork. They worked very hard last week in practice and it definitely showed.”

Newton’s junior varsity plays at home Tuesday against Oskaloosa.
