golfers bounce back at SEP Invitational

PLEASANT HILL — Winding down the regular season, Newton High’s golf team came back from a disappointing showing on Monday to shoot a 333 team score. Unfortunately, the Cardinals played in “a loaded” eight-team Southeast Polk Invitational Tuesday, according to NHS head coach Pat Riley.

“We placed eighth, but shot much better than Monday,” Riley said. “Our guys will have a much needed break now before heading to the Ottumwa Invitational on Oct. 2.”

Iowa’s Class 4A district golf tournaments are Oct. 6.

Derek Damman carded the lowest score of the day for the Cardinals at Copper Creek Golf Course Tuesday. Damman finished with a 77 followed by Austin Reynolds with an 80. Devin Shores came in with an 85 and Jordan Henning shot a 91.

Payton Thomas fired a 95 and Tyler Thongvanh finished with a 100 for the 18-hole tournament.
