Prairie City-Monroe won for the second week in a row while Lynnville-Sully is still looking for its first win of the season.
Here’s the Week 4 roundup of area teams:
Newton 45, Benton Community 6
Five players scored touchdowns for Newton High’s Cardinals and Nick Easley kicked a field goal plus five extra points in Friday night’s 45-6 win at home over Benton Community of Van Horne.
In front of a large homecoming crowd, the Cardinals scored 24 points in the second quarter following a scoreless first period. They stretched their 24-0 halftime lead to 38-0 by the end of three quarters. The Bobcats avoided a shutout with a touchdown drive late in fourth period, which was answered with a final touchdown for Newton.
Joseph Banfield crossed the goal line twice in the game for the Cardinals. Tyler Wood, Tristan Peters, J.T. Thongvanh and Reese Rosenquist each had one TD.
“I was proud of how everybody played,” said NHS senior Collin Jacobsen, who plays as defensive lineman. “We had our playmakers making plays and had great pad level along the line. It all starts up front. It’s great to win our senior homecoming game.”
Defensively, Jordan Travis blocked a punt that was recovered by Bryce Tish, setting up Newton’s second touchdown. Tish intercepted a Bobcat pass to set up a score in the third quarter. Brett Wolf, senior linebacker, had six solo tackles and two assisted tackles.
The Newton freshman team claimed a 30-12 win over Benton Friday night.
Newton is 4-0 overall and 2-0 in Class 3A District 6 play. The Cardinals travel to Gilbert Friday night.
Montezuma 25, Lynnville-Sully 0
MONTEZUMA — Lynnville-Sully’s Hawks strive for their first win of the season. They came up empty again Friday night at Montezuma in Class A District 7 play.
Lynnville-Sully trailed 6-0 after the first quarter. Montezuma pushed to an 18-0 halftime lead then scored a touchdown in the third quarter.
"Montezuma is a good team which should contend for the district championship,” said Mike Parkinson, Hawk head coach. “We played pretty well and saw progress. We’re just not able to finish drives offensively.”
Sage Ehresman returned to the field for Lynnville-Sully after an injury sidelined him for two weeks. Parkinson said Ehresman ran hard. He said Blake Wehrle, Noah Zylstra and Noah Engle each had strong showings in the game.
The Hawks (0-4) go to Iowa Valley Friday.
Collins-Maxwell/Baxter 34, Nevada 19
BAXTER — Brady Stover scored three touchdowns and the CMB Raiders' defense slowed Nevada's rushing attack enough to earn a non-district win against the visiting Cubs.
Stover caught touchdown passes of 52, 41 and 29 yards — all from junior Nate Bishop — in the second half after CMB held a 7-6 halftime advantage.
Nevada running back Chase Dobson managed only 101 yards on 24 carries. He entered the game having rushed for more than 200 yards twice this season and averaging over 11 yards per carry.
"(Starting) the season 4-0 is just amazing," said Stover, who also intercepted a pass. "It just feels awesome."
Prairie City-Monroe 50, Davis County 6
MONROE — PCM's Mustangs two-upped themselves in a dominating victory over Davis County.
One week after scoring 48 points in its first win of the season, PCM's offense delivered another breakout performance. Ronnie Marshall rushed for three touchdowns in the first half and quarterback Logan Gilman connected with Luke Greiner for two more scores as the Mustangs posted 42 first-half points.
Davis County's lone scoring strike of the night came on a 81-yard play in the first half.
Scoring plays were first reported by KRLS 92.1 FM.
