Safety first

Kindergartners from Colfax-Mingo School District practiced crossing the road with the Newton Police Department at Aurora Park in Newton Monday. Using play houses and trikes provided by the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau, the kids took turns riding the trike and driving as a "car" while others waited to cross the road. Dealing with strangers, safe places and how to contact police were other topics discussed at the morning event.  Officer Brian Foster, who was working at the event, said it is a "wonderful opportunity" for kids to get out and learn. All kindergartners in the Newton Community School District participate in the program.
