Points scarce for PCM in loss to Central Decatur

Central Decatur quarterback Trenton Wells posed problems throughout Friday’s game against Prairie City-Monroe and played a big role in handing the Mustangs a 20-7 defeat.

Wells threw for two scores and ran for another in PCM’s second straight loss.

“Defensively, we played alright at times. On offense, we couldn’t get much going,” PCM head coach Greg Bonnett said. “It came down to some of our key players not doing their job very well.”

Bonnett referenced blocking when talking about some of his team’s shortcomings in its first road game of the season.

The Mustangs’ offense struggled to score points despite a solid statistical night from quarterback Logan Gilman. The junior completed 21 of his 29 pass attempts for 189 yards while throwing for a touchdown and an interception.

Gilman’s counterpart, Wells, totalled 157 yards passing and frequently connected with junior receiver Peyton Pedersen, who caught seven passes for 107 yards.

Wells also led the Cardinals with 84 yards rushing on 22 carries.

“He was a stud,” Bonnett said of Wells.

Defensively, Bonnett praised the play of Davis Herndon, Trey Lindsay and the Mustangs’ defensive line. Herndon recorded two tackles for loss and Lindsay intercepted his first pass of the season.

Seven players had at least four total tackles for the Mustangs, led by Luke Pendroy’s six stops.

Sophomore Luke Greiner caught PCM’s lone touchdown of the game. Greiner led the Mustangs in catches (nine) and receiving yards (72) against Central Decatur.

Junior Logan Litrell led PCM’s ground game with 77 yards on 19 carries.

Heading into district play next week, Bonnett said he’s hoping to get more leadership and improved play from his seniors.

“We’ve got to get our seniors stepping up and making plays,” Bonnett said.
