Monuments Men program on Tuesday

Library Closed for Labor Day

The Newton Public Library will be closed on Monday for Labor Day. We will reopen for normal hours at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

George Stout: WW2 Monuments Man from Iowa

Join us at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the library meeting room for an exciting program. Nancy Trask, Winterset library director, will present historical slides about “The Monuments Men,” highlighting George Stout, who was born and raised in Winterset.

George Clooney’s character in “The Monuments Men” was based on George Stout, although the character was named Frank Stokes for the sake of artistic license in the movie. Trask’s slides have been collected from extensive research, including correspondence with Stout’s granddaughter, magazine and newspaper articles from a publicist working on the Hollywood movie, historical Winterset resources, Internet resources and historical books.

Coffee & Movie:

‘The Book Thief’

There will be a free movie showing of “The Book Thief” at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the library meeting room.

Movie synopsis: While subjected to the horrors of World War II Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. In the basement of her home, a Jewish refugee is being sheltered by her adoptive parents. If you enjoy the movie, check out the book at the library after.

Calling all Teens

You will be seeing new changes in the teen section. New teen or YA books will now have their own section at the beginning of the teen section and will be marked with an orange dot. This will make it easier for you to find new releases by your favorite authors and browse. Keep an eye out for new furniture too.

Download Free Music

from the Library

Individuals may download up to three songs per week or one song and a music video from the Freegal database.

Every Monday, three new downloads will again be available. Go to www.newton.lib.ia.us, click on Freegal, log in with your up-to-date library card, and explore the 7 million songs from 28,000 recording labels. You also can get the app for your mobile device. Need help? Call the information desk, (641) 792-4108.

PINS coming

to Library Accounts

Starting Tuesday, logging in to the library catalog will require a four-digit PIN.

When you access your library account, renew your materials online, or place a hold, you will be asked for your library number and the PIN. You will be able to set or change your PIN yourself through ‘My Account’ in the library catalog. Our downloadables databases, Freegal and Wilbor, will require your PIN as well. It all starts on Tuesday.

iPad Basics Class

Join us for an iPad Basics Class at 6 p.m. Sept. 22 in the library meeting room.

Learn how to download ebooks free through the library, connect to Wi-Fi, change settings and sync email. Bring your fully charged iPad, Apple ID and password, and your library card (if you have one). Participants do not need to register for this class.
