Races finish at Marshalltown before rain poured in

MARSHALLTOWN — On the next-to-last points night of the 2014 racing season at Marshalltown Speedway, all five stock car divisions finished feature races before the heavy rain moved in.

Marshalltown Speedway holds a special night of racing Wednesday. The United States Modified Touring Series will run a Casey’s Hunt Race along with the Iron Man Challenge series for USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods. Hot laps start at 7 p.m. followed by the races.

Then Friday night, it will be the North 3rd Ave Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championship Night. It is the final night for track points. Top 12 in points will be locked into the feature, all other cars will run a last-chance race for starting position. Also making a return visit to the quarter-mile track are the flat track quads. Hot laps are at 7 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30 p.m.

Bryan Zehm went to the lead early and stayed there through Friday night’s 15-lap Mod Lites feature race. Zehm was not going to denied the win — not by any other driver or by a couple of caution restarts. Josh May ran second followed by Jimmy May, Charlie Brown and Joe Glick.

In the 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature race, Jamie Schirm used a strong move on a restart midway through the event to gain the lead and record a victory. Garrett Eilander edged out Gary Pfantz, who had led the race early, for second. Fourth went to John Watson and Travis Staley finished fifth.

A caution-filled feature for the Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Northern Sports Mods went to Clint Luellen. Luellen won for the seventh time at Marshalltown. Matt Lettow, who led the field near the middle of the 18-lap race, came across in second place. Jenae Gustin, Johnathan Logue and Sam Wieben finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

Donavon Smith got the job done in the 18-lap IMCA Stock Cars feature. Smith worked his way through the field from his 11th-place starting spot to the lead by the third lap. Smith saw the caution come out twice on Lap 4, but when racing resumed, he pulled away. Damon Murty. Steve Meyer, Robert Stofer and Michael Jaennette rounded out the top five.

The IMCA Modifieds feature went green-to-checkered caution free. The field went three wide on Lap 1 with rookie Jake Strayer grabbing the top spot. Strayer held on to the lead until Richie Gustin worked his way from ninth to second. Gustin took the lead away on Lap 6 and went on to take his fourth win of the season at Marshalltown. Racer Hulin was second, Jon Snyder was third, Strayer came in fourth and Ronn Lauritzen was fifth.
