‘Hike with a Ranger’ set for Sept. 21

The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge will host “Hike with a Ranger” from 2 to 3 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge, located at 9981 Pacific St. in Prairie City.

During the hike, participants will search for birds on the prairie. Early fall is the perfect time to view a variety of bird species as they prepare for their migration south or stop over briefly during their long journey. Participants might catch a glimpse of special birds from all over the country right at Neal Smith.

Many use the refuge as a prime location for fueling up on prairie seeds and insects. Together, participants and the ranger will use binoculars to spot bird species and record the number of different types we can find.

In case of bad weather, the program will still occur but staff will adapt the program to more appropriately fit the conditions. Bird enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels are welcome.

The next ranger hikes will take place on Oct. 19 and Nov. 16 from 2 to 3 p.m.

To register for any of the ranger-led hikes, contact Brianna Patrick at brianna_patrick@fws.gov or at (515) 994-3400.
